Day 1

Today started off great I got my backpack ready and headed down to the language school where I was greeted by Lilly, the cutest schoolmate ever. We assessed what I knew from my previous learning – not much- and made a plan for the next month of classes. I’m going to go twice a week for an hour a day and practice during the week with Jeff and the family. I like my teacher and am hopefully being immersed will help me learn faster.

Me, on my way to school, my first Frappe since I arrived and Lilly!

After school, we had to chase down our SIM cards which were supposed to be delivered on Monday but the courier couldn’t find us. It’s a very chicken-and-egg situation. See they need a number to call you to deliver something- but if the thing they are delivering is your cell phone access this is a problem- they can’t call us on the US numbers. We gave our aunts number but then forgot to give her a heads up. So now we have gone to the courier office a total of 3 times in 2 days. We did finally get the SIM cards and I’m currently waiting for my phone to backup to hopefully get access to the Cosmote cell service. Cross your fingers I will have a Greek phone number by tomorrow.

And now the down. You thought 3 times for the SIM cards was bad? That’s nothing. My latest attempt at obtaining a screwdriver has got to be a sign that maybe I should just give up. So, we received word our IKEA stuff was in YEAH- we picked up everything and put together the bathroom organizer, which made me so happy. We started on Jeff’s desk and found out we needed a SCREWDRIVER. No tool is included for this one. So, I went on a local delivery service- WOLT- they are the UberEats of Heraklion. They will deliver groceries, food from restaurants, anything you want, and cheap! I found a set of 4 screwdrivers at a store, and they were open 24 hours so I made the order- I added a few other things since the minimum amount I could order was 10 euros. I placed the order and waited. I then received a notification that the set of screwdrivers were out of stock but don’t worry- they won’t charge me for them. OY. As I waited for my order of things we still needed I let Jeff know what happened. The delivery guy arrived, and I went out, attempting to practice my Greek, and left Jeff inside. I said good evening (ΞšΞ±Ξ»Ξ·ΟƒΟ€ΞΟΞ±), thank you (Ξ•Ο…Ο‡Ξ±ΟΞΉΟƒΟ„ΟŽ) and then he started speaking very quickly and I panicked and called Jeff to the hallway to help. As the guy was explaining there were no screwdrivers at the store, Jeff closed the door behind himself- locking us out of our apartment. So, I’m in my PJ’s Jeff has no shoes on and we are locked out in the hallway. Luckily, he had his phone with him, and we had given a key to his aunt, who lives close by. She ran right over and gave us the extra key to get back in. But seriously- should I just give up? Glue everything together? Or just pay someone to fix every little thing? I’m at a loss- someone mail me a screwdriver from Tampa please!

If you need me, I will be in the bathroom admiring my lovely organizer that only needed an Allen wrench thingy that came with the screws.

Sounds like typical Greek life to me. That is why I can only do six months in Greece and then go back to America and recharge my batteries for six months till I can go back. If it helps there is the best wine and liquor store in Iraklio. They sell Blantons gold whiskey for €100. It’s $500 in the United States. And they have some great Pinot Noir.
